A thin, smooth layer of plaster for new builds and renovations on a flat surface. Thin plastering from €11 per m².
Thin plastering (in Dutch: dunpleisteren) means applying a layer of plaster of 2 to 3 millimetres to a surface that is already flat, such as gypsum blocks, sand-lime brick, concrete or plasterboard. The result is a smooth wall or ceiling that is ready for paint. Because it takes little material and time, it is the most affordable way to get smooth walls: with us from €11 per m².
What thin plaster is for
Thin plaster works best in new builds. Walls of gypsum blocks or sand-lime brick and concrete ceilings are already straight there, but have joints, pores and small height differences that show through a coat of paint. A thin layer of plaster smooths that out. In an existing home it works too, as long as the wall is flat and sound, for example after removing wallpaper from a good surface.
If a wall is crooked, has deep holes or the old plaster is coming loose, a thin layer is not enough. We then recommend paint-ready plastering, where the layer is thicker and the wall is levelled first. We will see which of the two suits your walls during the site visit.
New builds and contractors
A large share of our thin plastering is done for contractors and developers, as a finishing partner with our own team. We plan along with the construction schedule per home or per block, so the painter can start on the agreed day. We also work for private buyers of a new-build home, usually right after the key handover, so you do not move into a half-finished house.
How the job works
- Site visit. We measure the surface area and check that the surface is flat and dry enough for thin plaster.
- Preparation. Covering, filling joints and holes, and a primer on absorbent surfaces such as gypsum blocks.
- Thin plastering. The plaster goes on in one or two thin coats and is finished smooth.
- Drying. Because the layer is thin, it dries faster than regular plaster, usually within a few days to a week.

Thin plastering costs from €11 per m² of wall or ceiling surface. A bedroom with 40 m² of wall starts at about €440. A new-build home with around 250 m² of walls and ceilings starts at around €2,750. The price depends on the surface, the number of joints and corners and the travel distance. You always get a fixed price in the quote.

<p>Any flat, sound and dry surface. In practice these are mainly gypsum blocks, sand-lime brick, concrete, aerated concrete and plasterboard. Absorbent surfaces such as gypsum blocks get a primer first, smooth surfaces such as concrete a bonding primer.</p><p>Thin plaster cannot absorb large height differences, because the layer is only 2 to 3 millimetres. A wall with bumps, deep holes or loose old plaster is therefore not suitable. It also does not adhere well to damp walls or to old paint without treatment. <p>For paint-ready plastering, allow one to one and a half weeks before you paint. Thin plaster dries faster, usually within a few days to a week, because the layer is only 2 to 3 millimetres.</p><p>Drying time depends on the layer thickness, the temperature and ventilation. Leave a window slightly open and do not turn the heating up high, as drying too fast can cause hairline cracks. Plaster is dry when the colour is evenly light everywhere; as long as there are dark or damp patches, wait. If you paint too early, the paint can peel or stain.
